Summer in the North: To Capitalize or Not?

I hope everyone in the northern hemisphere is enjoying a good summer.

Or should it be this?

I hope everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is enjoying a good Summer.

It seems Some People feel the need to Capitalize Words They Deem Important.

Personally, it drives me crazy.

I understand a bit of debate over whether hemispheres are proper nouns, as they are the name of a large region. But there is no need for it. There’s not much less specific than half the planet.

So what about seasons? Well, now you’re talking about a quarter of the year. Still not too specific, so no reason to capitalize it.

When in doubt, check a dictionary. Here’s a link to my favorite!

(For those of you paying attention, the hemisphere can go either way…)

And as it is summer and I have been enjoying myself on Prince Edward Island for a bit of vacation time, I will keep it short and sweet this month.

Be sure to let me know if you are in the southern hemisphere and getting bogged down with the winter-time blues. I’ll send reinforcements!
